The BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) calculator estimates your blood alcohol level based on the number of standard drinks consumed, your body weight, gender, and the time elapsed since drinking. This tool is for educational purposes only — never rely on any calculator to determine if you are safe to drive.

How the Widmark Formula Works

The calculator uses the Widmark formula, the most widely recognized method for estimating BAC:

BAC (%) = (drinks × 14 g) ÷ (weight in grams × r) × 100 − (0.015 × hours)

Where:

  • 14 g = grams of pure alcohol in one US standard drink
  • r = Widmark distribution factor (0.68 for men, 0.55 for women)
  • 0.015%/hour = average alcohol elimination rate

Women reach higher BAC levels than men at the same intake because of a lower distribution factor (less body water relative to body weight) and generally lower levels of alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme.

Why the Estimate May Be Inaccurate

The Widmark formula provides a rough estimate. Your actual BAC can differ significantly due to:

  • Food — Eating before or while drinking slows absorption, lowering peak BAC by up to 20%.
  • Metabolism — Elimination rate ranges from 0.010 to 0.020%/hour depending on the individual.
  • Medications — Many common medications interact with alcohol and affect absorption.
  • Body composition — Muscle tissue absorbs alcohol differently than fat tissue.
  • Drinking pace — Rapid consumption produces a higher peak BAC than slow sipping.
  • Hydration — Dehydration concentrates alcohol in the blood.
