Leap Year Rules
A leap year adds one extra day (February 29) to keep the calendar aligned with Earth's orbit around the Sun. The rules are:
- If the year is divisible by 4 โ leap year
- Exception: If divisible by 100 โ not a leap year
- Exception to the exception: If divisible by 400 โ leap year
Examples:
- 2024 โ leap year (divisible by 4) โ
- 2100 โ NOT a leap year (divisible by 100) โ
- 2000 โ leap year (divisible by 400) โ
- 1900 โ NOT a leap year (divisible by 100, not by 400) โ
The next 10 leap years: 2024, 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040, 2044, 2048, 2052, 2056, 2060.
How to Remember Days in Each Month
The Knuckle Method
Make a fist and count across the knuckles and valleys of one hand:
- ๐ค Knuckle = 31 days: January, March, May, July
- ๐ Valley = 30 days (or 28/29): February, April, June
Continue on the second hand:
- ๐ค Knuckle = 31 days: August, October, December
- ๐ Valley = 30 days: September, November
July and August are both 31 days because August was named after Emperor Augustus, who insisted his month be as long as Julius Caesar's (July).
The Rhyme
"Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November. All the rest have thirty-one, except February alone, which has twenty-eight days clear, and twenty-nine in each leap year."
The Gregorian Calendar
The calendar used worldwide today was introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. It replaced the Julian calendar (established by Julius Caesar in 46 BC), which had a simpler leap-year rule that gradually caused the calendar to drift from the astronomical seasons by about 1 day every 128 years.
By 1582, the Julian calendar had drifted 10 days. Pope Gregory's reform skipped 10 days (October 4 jumped to October 15) and introduced the 100/400 leap year exceptions to prevent future drift. The Gregorian calendar is accurate to within 1 day per 3,236 years.
The calendar was adopted at different times around the world โ Catholic countries adopted it immediately in 1582, Britain and its colonies (including what became the United States) adopted it in 1752, and some countries didn't switch until the 20th century.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days are in a year?
A regular year has 365 days. A leap year has 366 days, with the extra day added as February 29. Leap years occur every 4 years, with exceptions for years divisible by 100 (unless also divisible by 400).
When is the next leap year?
Leap years occur every 4 years. Recent leap years include 2020 and 2024. The next leap years are 2028, 2032, and 2036. The year 2100 will NOT be a leap year despite being divisible by 4, because it is divisible by 100 but not 400.
Which month has the fewest days?
February has the fewest days: 28 in a regular year and 29 in a leap year. This is because when the Roman calendar was reformed, February was the last month of the year and received the leftover days.
How do I remember how many days are in each month?
Use the knuckle method: make a fist and count knuckles (31 days) and valleys (30 or fewer days) starting from January. July and August are both knuckles (31 days). You can also use the classic rhyme: 'Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November...'
What is the Gregorian calendar?
The Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII to fix the drift of the Julian calendar. It's the internationally accepted civil calendar used in virtually every country today. Its leap year rules keep it accurate to within 1 day per 3,236 years.
