How to calculate monthly salary from hourly wage
Monthly salary is calculated by multiplying hourly wage by monthly working hours:
Monthly salary = Hourly wage × Weekly hours × 52 ÷ 12
For example, with an hourly wage of $18/hr and 37.5 h weekly working hours, the monthly salary is approximately $2,925/month.
Most common weekly working hours
| Industry | Weekly working hours | Working hours/month |
|---|---|---|
| Office work (general) | 37.5 h | 162.5 |
| Retail | 37.5 h | 162.5 |
| Industry | 40 h | 173.3 |
| Construction | 40 h | 173.3 |
| Healthcare | 38.25 h | 165.75 |
Monthly working hours are obtained by the formula: weekly hours × 52 weeks ÷ 12 months.
When is converting hourly wage to monthly salary useful?
- Job change — hourly paid work changes to monthly paid, and you want to compare income level
- Loan application — banks usually ask for monthly incomes, not hourly wage
- Budgeting — monthly salary is an easier starting point for planning expenses
- Part-time work — find out how much you earn per month with a smaller number of hours
Gross or net?
The calculator works with both gross and net salary. Employment contracts and job advertisements usually state gross salary. If you want to know the take-home amount, use net salary.
